What to Do When Your Heat Goes Out

Are you already wearing socks and heavy layers indoors?

Do you know what to do if your heat goes out in the middle of winter?

When the temperature drops and your home suddenly feels more like an icebox than a sanctuary, it's a clear sign that your heating system is in trouble. It’s important to know what steps to take if your heating system is no longer doing the job.

Step 1: Check the Thermostat

The first thing you should do is check your thermostat. Make sure it's set to the desired temperature and in "heat" mode. The issue might be as simple as a thermostat setting.

Step 2: Inspect the Circuit Breaker

If your heating system runs on electricity, a tripped circuit breaker could be the culprit. Head to your electrical panel and check if the breaker for your heating system is in the "on" position. If it's tripped, reset it and see if your heat returns.

Step 3: Check for Fuel Supply (Gas Furnace)

If you have a gas furnace, make sure that the gas supply valve is open. Also, check for the presence of a pilot light. If the pilot light is out, follow the manufacturer's instructions to relight it safely.

Step 4: Check Your Vents

Blocked or obstructed vents can lead to poor heating. Ensure that all vents and registers are open and clear, allowing warm air to flow freely throughout your home.

Step 5: Monitor for Unusual Sounds or Odors

Pay attention to any unusual sounds, smells, or warning indicators on your heating system. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, turn off your system and contact your HVAC company immediately.

Step 6: Contact Your Trusted HVAC Company

Ken Rosengren, Google Review

“CMR is top notch from beginning to end. I had a few quotes to replace my 20 year old furnace and AC. Andy picked out a great choice without trying to oversell. I like the Bryant brand they offer since parts and repairs will be easy in the future unlike some other brands. Installation occurred as planned and on time and the techs were great and went above and beyond. Even the inspector said CMR does a great job. Definitely recommend!”
